This weekend marked one of the most anticipated dates in the Witton Albion Brass Band calendar — our annual awards evening. It’s a chance for us to pause, come together, and celebrate everything we’ve achieved over the past year. And what a year it has been.
Looking Back on an Incredible Season
Before the big night, we reflected on the highlights that have made this season one of the most successful in our history. The band has enjoyed a remarkable run of contest results, performances, and new opportunities:
🏆 French Open – 1st Section Champions
🏆 Red Admiral Fleetwood – 2nd place in the Championship Section
🏆 Red Admiral Chorley – 1st Section winners & 3rd place Championship band, plus multiple best‑section awards
🎤 A spectacular concert with Damien Charles of The Drifters
🌟 A star‑studded charity showcase alongside Matthew Kelly and Justin Moorhouse, raising funds for the Neuromuscular Centre
🏟️ And of course, settling into our fantastic new home at Witton Albion FC
It has been a year defined by hard work, musical excellence, community spirit, and plenty of fun along the way. With so much to celebrate, anticipation for the awards evening was sky‑high — and it didn’t disappoint.
A Night of Celebration, Laughter and Recognition
The evening itself was everything we hoped for: relaxed, enjoyable, and full of camaraderie. Members took part in quizzes, karaoke, team challenges and more, all while reflecting on the achievements that have shaped the band’s year.
But the heart of the night was the presentation of our annual awards — a moment to recognise those who have made an outstanding contribution to the band.
🏆 Band’s Person of the Year – Gaz Broughton
A hugely popular and well‑deserved winner, Gaz was voted for by the band and also received recognition for an incredible 35 years of service. His dedication, reliability and passion continue to inspire everyone around him.

🏆 Section of the Year – The Cornet Section
Consistently brilliant throughout the year, our cornet section has delivered excellence on stage time and time again. Their award reflects not only musical quality but teamwork and commitment.

🏆 Player of the Year – Paddy Bloor
Our outstanding young solo trombonist, Paddy has shone all year as both a section leader and regular soloist. His musicianship and maturity make him a hugely deserving recipient of this award.

Many other awards were presented across the evening — too many to list — but each one highlighted the strength, spirit and talent within the band.
A Perfect Ending to a Perfect Evening
To top off an already fantastic night, England secured a win, adding an extra cheer to the celebrations. As we look ahead, we do so with pride in what we’ve achieved and excitement for what’s still to come.
The Witton Albion Brass Band continues to grow, thrive and make music we’re proud of — and this awards evening was the perfect way to celebrate the people who make it all possible.
