Witton Albion Band Enjoys Success at Red Admiral Entertainment Contest

At the end of September, members of Witton Albion Band made the short journey to Chorley to compete at the ever-popular Red Admiral Entertainment Contest. Entering both the First Section and Championship Section competitions, the band faced a busy but rewarding day of music-making against some outstanding opposition.
The day got off to an excellent start in the First Section contest, where the band delivered a confident and entertaining programme that was rewarded with a fantastic third-place finish. In addition to securing a podium position, the band's cornet section received special recognition by being awarded the prize for Best Cornets, a testament to the quality and consistency of their playing throughout the performance.
The result reflected the hard work and preparation that had gone into the contest, and provided a welcome boost ahead of the band's second appearance of the day in the Championship Section.
Competition at Championship level was always going to be fierce, with some of the region's strongest bands taking to the stage. Despite stepping up against elite opposition, Witton Albion Band delivered a performance that the players and musical team were immensely proud of. There was a real sense within the band that the performance captured the musicality, energy and commitment that had been worked on throughout rehearsals.
When the results were announced, the band was placed sixth. While the adjudicators' ranking did not quite reflect the feelings of those on stage, contesting is always subjective, and every musician knows that different interpretations and priorities can influence the final outcome. As is often said in the brass band world, "That's banding!"
Rather than dwell on the result, the band chose to focus on the many positives from the day. Competing successfully in two sections, achieving a top-three finish, taking home the Best Cornets award, and delivering a Championship Section performance that the band genuinely enjoyed are all significant achievements.
The day also highlighted the strength of the contest itself. Once again, Red Admiral Entertainment Contests provided a well-organised and enjoyable event, giving bands the opportunity to perform in a friendly yet competitive environment. Credit must also go to fellow competitors, with congratulations to Horbury Victoria Band and Wingates Band for claiming first and second place respectively in the First Section contest.
With the contest season moving quickly on, there was little time for reflection before attention turned to the next project. The band's commitment to continual improvement remains as strong as ever, and members returned to the bandroom eager to build on the successes of Chorley and prepare for the challenges ahead.
Looking back, the Red Admiral Entertainment Contest was a day filled with excellent music, strong performances and valuable lessons. A third-place finish in the First Section, the Best Cornets award, and a spirited Championship Section performance made it a day that Witton Albion Band can be proud of, and one that provides plenty of encouragement as the band continues its musical journey.
Congratulations to all involved, and thank you to everyone who supported the band throughout the day.
